Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 – Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Begin your adventure at Machame Gate (1,800m) with registration and a briefing from your guides. The trek starts through a dense rainforest filled with wildlife, from blue monkeys to exotic birds. The trail is often muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles are recommended. After approximately 5–7 hours of steady hiking, you’ll arrive at Machame Camp (3,000m). Here, your tents will be set up, and you’ll enjoy a warm meal prepared by your mountain chef. The evening offers a first taste of mountain life with stunning views of the surrounding forest as you prepare for the climb ahead.
Day 2 – Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Wake up early to crisp mountain air and a hearty breakfast. The trail takes you out of the forest and into the heather and moorland zone. It’s a steady uphill hike with spectacular views of Mount Meru in the distance. The vegetation changes dramatically, giving way to beautiful wildflowers and rocky terrain. After 5–6 hours of hiking, you’ll reach Shira Camp (3,840m) on the vast Shira Plateau. Take time to rest, hydrate, and acclimatise as temperatures drop significantly in the evening. Sunset here is breathtaking, offering your first panoramic view of Kilimanjaro’s peak glowing in the distance.
Day 3 – Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Today is a key acclimatisation day as you ascend to Lava Tower (4,630m) before descending to Barranco Camp (3,960m). The trek lasts 6–8 hours, crossing rugged alpine terrain with fewer plants and increasingly dramatic views. Lunch is typically served near Lava Tower, where you may feel the altitude. The descent into Barranco Valley is both beautiful and rewarding, with lush greenery and the impressive Breach Wall towering overhead. At camp, enjoy a warm dinner and rest while watching the stunning evening light fade across the mountain. This climb-high, sleep-low day is essential for better acclimatisation.
Day 4 – Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Start the morning with the famous Barranco Wall climb, a thrilling scramble that rewards you with panoramic views of the valley below. Despite its intimidating appearance, the climb is safe and manageable with the guidance of your crew. After the wall, the trail undulates with a series of ascents and descents, crossing ridges and valleys. The hike takes 4–5 hours to Karanga Camp (4,035m). Spend the afternoon resting, hydrating, and enjoying the crisp mountain air. This camp is ideal for preparing your body for higher altitudes while taking in stunning views of Kibo Peak.
Day 5 – Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Today is a shorter yet steeper hike of about 4–5 hours to Barafu Camp (4,640m), the high camp for summit night. The landscape becomes barren and rocky, resembling a lunar environment. You’ll arrive at camp by midday, allowing ample time to rest, eat, and hydrate. The guides will brief you on the upcoming summit push, ensuring you are prepared mentally and physically. Early dinner is served, and by evening you’ll rest in your tent, trying to sleep before the midnight wake-up call for your final ascent to Uhuru Peak.
Day 6 – Summit Day (Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp)
Your summit attempt begins around midnight. Equipped with headlamps and warm layers, you’ll ascend slowly in the dark towards Stella Point (5,739m), reaching the crater rim as the first light of dawn appears. Push forward to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa, for breathtaking views and an unforgettable sense of achievement. After celebrating and taking photos, descend carefully to Barafu Camp for a short rest and brunch. The trek continues down to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for your final night on the mountain, where you’ll sleep deeply after the challenging but rewarding day.
Day 7 – Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Enjoy your last breakfast on the mountain before beginning your descent through the lush rainforest zone. The trail is easier but can be slippery, so take your time and use your trekking poles. After 3–4 hours, you’ll arrive at Mweka Gate (1,640m), where you’ll sign out and receive your summit certificate—a lasting reminder of your incredible accomplishment. Your driver will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel for a hot shower, a celebratory meal, and well-deserved rest. This marks the end of an unforgettable Machame Route Kilimanjaro adventure.
